Britannia claims it was a purchaser in good faith. It, therefore, is the owner of the Parthenon Marbles. The problem with Britannia’s conclusion is that Lord Elgin has no proof of any consideration paid to the Ottoman Sultan or any authority granted to remove the Marbles from the Parthenon. Based upon Lord Elgin’s condition in the purchase terms, the British Parliament said that the Parthenon Marbles would hereafter be legally referred to as the “Elgin Marbles.” With the stroke of Parliament’s pen, Britannia decided it was entitled to call these priceless ancient Grecian sculptures—a British Collection.
